Rottweilers are highly intelligent, loyal, beautiful dogs. But aside from their breed’s characteristics, an untrained rottweiler can be a total handful, which is why rottweiler training is so important. These dogs can be very independent and determined, which makes early training a must.
Training Your Rott Early
Even though this breed is known for their affectionate behavior and the fact that they’re very hardworking, they tend to get a bad name because untrained dogs can be aggressive and antisocial, especially if they feel threatened. However, these characteristics can be easily avoided with proper therapy dog training.
Training should begin when your rott is still a puppy. By starting as early as three months old, your dog will begin to establish the right habits before bad ones have a chance to develop. But training a puppy will require a lot of dedication, time, positive reinforcement, and patience. A dog has a very short memory, so if you find some destroyed shoe hours after it happened, your dog is not going to understand why he or she is being punished.
This type of training just won’t get through to your dog, and instead, will only cause the dog to fear you. On the other hand, if you find your pup bullying another dog in the home and you take action while it’s taking place, you can make it clear that this type of behavior is not acceptable.
Instead of yelling at your dog for unwanted behaviors, you should try rewarding him when he shows good behavior. In addition to verbally praising your dog, offer them a small treat. But be careful with the type of treats you give your pup. Rottweilers are often overweight, which can put unnecessary pressure on the joints and can lead to all sorts of health problems.
Consistency is Key
Aside from offering treats and praising your dog for good behavior, training your rott the right way will require consistency. When you establish a bathroom and feeding schedule, it’s very important that these activities take place at the same time every day. Make sure you take your dog to the same spot to do their business, at the same time of day in order to establish a routine.
Most dogs are considered creatures of habit, so by creating a routine, you can effectively train them to eat when they’re supposed to and eliminate outdoors.
Most rotts don’t like to be left alone, instead, they love to be around people. They especially hate being confined to small spaces, which can make crate training very difficult. If it’s possible, have a person in the home at all times during the training process. The more supervision your rott pup has, the faster he will master training and the more confident and secure he will feel.

For most pet owners, potty training is a priority, but it’s also important to teach them basic commands. Commands such as stay, down, and sit, can be taught through rewards and repetition. However, rotts also require plenty of socialization when they’re younger, otherwise, they may develop aggression towards other dogs or animals in general. We don’t recommend taking your dog to a dog park. Instead, opt for a more controlled environment. Meet up with a friend and their dog in a neutral territory and introduce both dogs while they’re on leashes. You should begin socializing your rott as soon as possible.
