Wildlife Wednesday: Wild Golden Hamsters Come Out by Day, Not by Night
Your Syrian hamster sleeps all day and runs half the night. In the lab, hamsters do more than 80% of their activity in the dark. So it surprised researchers when they finally watched wild golden hamsters and found them out of their burrows almost only in daylight.
What the field study found
In 2005 and 2006, a German, American, and Turkish team led by Rolf Gattermann tagged 12 wild female hamsters in southern Turkey. They put readers on the burrow entrances to log every exit and return (Biology Letters, 2008). The females came out in two windows, roughly 6–8 a.m. and 4–7:30 p.m. They stayed underground through the midday heat and through the night. On average they spent just 87 minutes a day above ground, and almost all of that was foraging.
The authors suggest two reasons. Owl pellets near the burrows contained hamster teeth, so the night is dangerous. Midday is hot. A wild hamster’s day is short, purposeful trips out for food, with the rest spent safe in the burrow.
What it means for your hamster
Night activity at home is still normal. Wild-caught males brought into the lab were strictly nocturnal when observed four weeks later. The hamster clock bends to its surroundings, and in our homes it settles on night. Let your hamster sleep through the day, and plan handling and spot-cleaning for when they wake on their own.
Give them a burrow, not just a hide. In a 2006 Swiss study of 45 male hamsters (Hauzenberger et al.), hamsters on 10 cm of bedding gnawed the cage wire more and ran more on their wheels. Every hamster given 40 or 80 cm dug a burrow and lived in it, and those on 80 cm never wire-gnawed at all. It’s one study, but the authors recommend deep, diggable bedding. Give as much depth as your enclosure safely holds, even if it’s only in one corner.
Make food something to find. Wild hamsters spend their time outside foraging. Scatter part of the daily dry mix through the bedding instead of filling a bowl. Carrying food home to stash is normal hamster behavior, but take out fresh foods before they spoil. Our guide to hamsters and blueberries covers sensible treat sizes.
Let them live alone. The researchers describe wild golden hamsters as solitary and widely spread out. That fits the standard advice to house Syrian hamsters on their own.
What we still don’t know
This was 12 females, in spring only. The team couldn’t record what the hamsters did inside their burrows. Unpublished data from the same group suggests wild males are active around the clock. Treat the study as a window into the species, not a schedule to force on your pet.

Tonight, before your hamster wakes up, scatter a pinch of their usual food across the deepest part of the bedding. Then watch them search, stuff their cheeks, and dig. That’s the 87 minutes a wild hamster lives for.
