Thursday Health Check: Weigh Your Guinea Pig Weekly (and When a Drop Means the Vet)

Guinea pigs are prey animals. Looking unwell gets a prey animal picked off first, so they’re experts at seeming fine until they aren’t. By the time you see a hunched posture or a dull coat, an illness may have been building for days. A kitchen scale can catch it sooner.

The sign: a weight that keeps drifting down

Your guinea pig can hide how they feel, but not what they weigh. Dental problems, infections and gut trouble often show up as a slow weight loss before anything else is obvious. A thick coat, especially on long-haired breeds, hides it well.

So the thing to watch for this Thursday isn’t something you can see. It’s a number in your notebook.

How to do a weekly weigh-in

  • Use a digital kitchen scale that reads in grams. Set a small bowl or plastic tub on it, tare it to zero, then pop your guinea pig in.
  • Same day, same time, every week. Weight shifts a little over the day with eating and drinking, so keep the conditions consistent.
  • Write it down. The trend tells you something; a single reading rarely does.
  • Do a quick hands-on check while you’re at it. Run your hands from behind the ears to the hips. On a well-conditioned guinea pig you can feel the spine and ribs as gentle bumps that aren’t sharp. Glance at the eyes, ears, nails and the skin under the fur too.

How much change matters

For an adult guinea pig, the long-running reference site Guinea Lynx gives a rule of thumb: a change of about one ounce (roughly 28 g) is normal. Two ounces (about 57 g) means go on alert. Three ounces (about 85 g) is a red alert. At four ounces (about 113 g), get to a vet. Other keepers and vets use slightly different cut-offs, so treat these as a guide and not a diagnosis. The pattern matters more than the exact figure. A small loss that shows up again week after week deserves a vet visit even if no single drop looks dramatic.

Gains count too. Steady weight gain in an adult can mean too many pellets or not enough room to roam, which is worth raising at your next checkup.

When to call your vet

  • Book an appointment if you see a steady downward trend across two or three weigh-ins, or a single drop in the alert range.
  • Call the same day if your guinea pig stops eating, passes fewer or smaller droppings, or seems hunched and quiet. Don’t wait for the next weigh-in. Guinea pigs can go downhill quickly when they stop eating.
  • Once you suspect a problem, weigh daily and take your log to the appointment. A vet who knows guinea pigs will find those numbers useful.

It takes five minutes a week, and nobody knows your guinea pig’s normal better than you. For more on their diet, see our guides to pumpkin and vitamin C and broccoli and bloat risk.
